ONYX - The translucent colour

In November we are celebrating Colour of the Month #15, Onyx - The translucent colour. I will go through the origin, chemical composition, varieties and colours, and uses and applications. COURSE IN DESIGN, COLOUR THEORY, ALCHEMY

I will like to share my experience of teaching in Argentina about Design and Colour. I taught a course on Design, Colour Theory and Alchemy to locals with no design or colour formation whatsoever. It was a fulfilling, heart-centered experience of sharing my knowledge and wisdom with others.

Colour Alchimia at Bota Fogo in Milan

Super excited and inspired after my latest workshop in Milan. I met really interesting people and creatives; it was a multicultural group mainly Italians, a New Yorker and a Lebanese. Most of them colour designers for the automotive and fashion industry, art directors and industrial designers.

ULTRAMARINE BLUE : Colour of the month #9

Throughout history, blue colour was unobtainable or rare. Humans took many years to discover, understand and work with this colour. It wasn’t easily found in nature making it quite difficult to extract. One of the most expensive blue colours in history, even more than gold is Ultramarine Blue due to its extensive production process and its origin.

The DIY Colour Recipe Book tells the story and shares the recipes for making the Colour Provenance palette, made up of 8 ancient colours such as: Whiteshell, Saffron, Ochre, Verdigris, Malachite, Azurite, Mummy Brown and Lamp Black, colours that have been long lost and forgotten over time and replaced by synthetic alternatives.

A m s t e r d a m in Colours

The Traveling Colour Book this time is Amsterdam. The city was pouring colours everywhere. I saw COLOUR spreading in the city; on the surprising canals, in the contrasting architecture, inside inspiring cafes and concept stores, in the rubbish and in the way they dress. Dutch people love colour and are keen in creating new colour combinations.

MOBA (www.moba.nu), Fashion Biennale Arnhem, took place in the Netherlands from June 8 until July 21, 2013. The re-known curator Lidewij Edelkoort, selected a relevant theme for this year's exhibition, 'Fetishism in Fashion'.

An Outdoor Gallery / Bristol

This is my trip to Bristol, a city in the South West England. Is the sixth largest city in England, bringing a huge culture and arts capital to the region. This city is famous for its music and film industries, and especially for Street Art. Bristol is also home to street art event See No Evil, which started in 2011.

'MOK A coffee art' by designer LAURA DAZA

'MOK A coffee art' is a collection of limited edition illustrations created by designer and artist Laura Daza www.lauradaza.com, inspired in one of her greatest passions, the enjoyment of drinking a cup of the best hand roasted coffee. Is the romanticism, the aroma and the secret behind this art making, what makes it appealing to many coffee lovers, especially to this designer/artist.

The drinking of coffee is about indulging in the simple pleasures of life and the sharing of moments together; the foam technique and the interesting designs made by pouring the foamed milk into the espresso such as lovely hearts, leaves and abstract shapes; is what makes this a unique experience.

MOK A, name that comes from Moka pot or espresso machinetta or machine; is a coffee maker invented by Italians. It is a nostalgic design that brings affection and is essential in almost every cucina italiana 'Italian kitchen'. The designer got inspiration for this project while traveling to Italy and understanding the art of drinking a cappuccino, espresso or any other coffee derivative.

With this project the aim is to reinterpret and propose a new imagery of the traditional Moka aluminum pot. The use of vibrant colours, geometric shapes, polka dots and contrasting elements makes it a hip and pop design, exploring the boundaries of design and different ways of expressing and experimenting with life emotions. All the illustrations were hand-drawn using funky coloured markers and inks to give the sketchy appereance.

'My studio place is located in Bethnal Green, in the East part of London. It can be said that is my home and tabernacle where I enjoy working, letting my ideas flow and especially make the best coffee in the Moka pot' - Laura Daza

Tracey Neuls' Shoes - A Sculptural Artwork

Tracey Neuls is a contemporary shoe designer with a shop located in the heart of Shoreditch, in the trendy Redchurch Street. A colourful graffiti facade makes it appealing to pedestrians passing by the shop window, which is characterized by an installation of hanging shoes in a minimalistic style. Each shoe is thought as a sculptural artwork; a unique piece that resembles textures, colours and crafts; and a storyteller, which reflects concepts and ideas she has encountered on her daily journeys.

This brand has been open to the public for more than 12 years giving the best of contemporary design to Londoners. This designer thinks about non-ephemeral and timeless products; designing without boundaries, which mingles between art and design with a story and secret to keep. In the design process, she finds inspiration from any source but her aim is always offering the best, a sublime product for its quality of performance connected to delightful prints and shapes to perceive. Tracey has collaborated with creative brands and artists such as Dezeen; Nicola Yeoman; Nina Saunders; London Design Festival.

HASSAN HAJJAJ - A Colourful Moroccan Passion

The finding of a hidden Moroccan treasure, in the heart of the Shoreditch area in East London, was a surprisingly delightful spot to discover. Is Hassan Hajjaj's retail shop and creative space, in which the juxtaposition of the Northern African culture with West patterns, can be seen in this unique space of interaction for design lovers.

A display of blending colours; a collage of prints; furniture made of recycled materials with a Moroccan style, is a pleasure to admire and feel once you get inside. It can be said that the aesthetics of Hassan's work may be considered a carnival of colours and textures transmitting a powerful energy that merges tradition and pop-culture.

Hassan Hajjaj is an interdisciplinary artist, photographer and designer based in London, who was born in Larache in Northern Morocco. His style and taste was modeled by the rhythms and idiosyncrasy of this enduring multiethnic culture. Foremost, this eclectic artist moved in 1973 to London putting down roots and growing up between artists, music and folk traditions that constructed his creative vision and reinforced his cultural heritage.

Cultural syncretism is perceived in the life of Hassan by merging cross-cultural plots of music; clothing; body language and behaviour patterns. (Canevacci, 1993) There appears to be a significant exchange of ideas and visual images, as a means of communications; it is not just about the image itself, it is about the hidden meaning it transmits by reflecting the values and beliefs of his Moroccan culture. Sustainability and recycling is essential in his designs by using, fibers, wood, cans, packages, plastic that amalgamate with each other and uses the unsubtle repetition of motifs symbolizing the Moroccan language.

He invites people and a community to gather together and enjoy a exquisite cup of Moroccan tea and coffee in his lovely shop. Hassan´s installations have been part of the V&A Museum, British Museum and he has shown his work and traditions all around the world.

Marimekko+LAURADAZA workshop At BoXPaRk

Marimekko is a Finnish design and creative brand with the ideology of producing locally and conveying their Finnish culture worldwide. The concepts and inspirations are a quite interesting topic behind the history of this brand since 1951 and its founder Armi Ratia.

Their belief of finding happiness in everyday moments and having an emotional quality of life by sharing these moments with others; is transmitted by the design of home wear and fashion products. As a result, colour is the main theme behind their concepts with the idea of liberating the body and mind and being inspired by the vibrations of these. With their latest collection shown for the first time in the New York Fashion Week 'Art of printmaking - colour for a reason', they had the chance to convey their message of timeless products produced to last forever.

This brand has created a village in which a community of people enjoy the simple moments of life such as drinking a cup of coffee or tea, buying healthy food, eating sweets, go for a ride, meditate, cook and share with others. Therefore, intentionally they have designed workshops in different worldwide shops to create conscious communities. I had the chance to assist to one of Marimekko's workshops at the Boxpark, one of the first pop-up mall, located in the Shoreditch area in East London. In the upper deck, all the fabrics and remnants were displayed for people to interact and be able to create fun accessories and puppets for FREE!
